Cain and Newt to Face Off in Debates

USA Today is reporting that Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich are to face each other in a minimum of two Lincoln-Douglas style debates. Story is here with a hat tip to Drudge Report for their link to this story.

I think this is a wonderful idea. We can see how the smooth and polished politician holds up in a true debate against the plain-spoken businessman. In a strange way, it is eerily similar to the L-D debates of 1858. It is being sponsored by the Texas Tea Party Patriots. It could lead to other L-D style debates with other GOP candidates – something I would like to see instead of retreads of talking points and speech bits that are timed to the micro-second or for dramatic effect. This would give us a chance to have a true debate, a chance to really find out about these two candidates at a minimum. I only hope that this is successful and brings similar deabtes with other candidates.
